Piaroas
This series of drawings explores the culture of the Piaroa people, reflecting on the significance and influence of Western education within the community and its impact on childhood development. The works address the concerns of elders regarding the emphasis placed on forms of learning that often offer little relevance to the future needs of the community, contrasting formal academic subjects with the practical knowledge, skills, and responsibilities required for life and survival in the rainforest.
Fishing, territory, cosmology, and the transmission of ancestral knowledge emerge as essential ways of coexisting and sustaining cultural identity. These elements are represented through playfulness and figurative imagery within the drawings, while everything else gradually fades away, emphasizing what remains truly meaningful to the community’s way of life.
